General Assembly opened its doors amidst two historic Hollywood union strikes. They needed to find a solution that reliably and efficiently archived their data to LTO tape drives, and keep their costs low.
Listen to how Atempo Miria solved General Assembly's immediate data management challenges and set them up for future growth--reliably, securely, and cost-effectively.
Hosted by John Diel, Sales Director of Atempo Americas with guests Tanner Alvarez, Co-Founder of the groundbreaking documentary studio General Assembly, and longtime Atempo partner and engineer, Kevin Frand, Sr Solutions Architect at Alt Systems.
"It's clear to see that the studios are going to expect, and I think this is the key word for 2024, efficiency. We are trying to show how much efficiency we can build and how much value we can provide. We saw the benefit with Miria almost immediately with a reduction in the manual hours needed to maintain our data archival and data retention policies and procedures. This means more efficiency, and money back to our customers."
-Tanner Alvarez, Co-Founder and Head of Post-Production, General Assembly
"As General Assembly grows, they may want to integrate emerging new technologies. Miria offers the ability to start small, and it can scale as large as they want it to grow. Miria doesn't care where the data is coming from or going to, as long as the Miria server can see the file system, they can access the data. For example, if they open up a second facility across town or across country, Myria could copy the data to file systems in remote locations, as well as their local location, to the cloud, or even a tape library. There's no limitation on how large."

An Atempo Customer Journey: National Film Board of Canada

Thursday Dec 02, 2021
Atempo VP of Sales and Alliances, Ferhat Kaddour sits down for a chat with Jimmy Fournier, Director R&D and Digital Platforms, NFB, to discuss their longtime customer relationship with Atempo and how Miria for Analytics is revolutionizing their workflow.
"We chose Atempo because we felt it was the best solution for archiving but also because of the unique relationship we new we would have with the company. When you have regular supplier, especially for us as a government agency, having direct and regular access is critical. One of my engineer's main priorities is to work with Atempo on different projects. So if an issue happens, you don't open a ticket like you do with regular supplier, you work together to investigate and help on the solution. You have to do the first level of support internally, and then let the engineers work together. It's a completely different type of a relationship. As a result of this collaboration, NFB was able to preserve in each cell format, all their audio-visual content using Atempo digital archive solution. We use Atempo for all our data movement across the studios in Canada. We have used their solution on many successful projects and features over the last 13 years. We made the right choice with Atempo."

Oscar nominated, Emmy winning FX studio, Legacy Effects is one of the largest practical visual effects houses in North America specializing in practical makeups, animatronics, specialty suits, conceptual design, 3d printing, and rapid prototyping for films and television shows. Legacy Effects has brought to the screen the most iconic characters in history from E.T to “baby Yoda” from Mandalorian and many others.
Legacy Effects is a longtime customer of Atempo. We sit down with Legacy Effects IT Manager, David Castinez and Studio Manager Damon Weathers to discuss how Atempo's Time Navigator "Tina" solution has helped them to back up and protect their iconic assets.
David Castinez on Atempo Tina's critical role at Legacy Effects
“We engaged with Atempo around the time of our founding in 2008 because we had the need for a solution that would address a variety of different scenarios like disaster recovery and ransomware. Thanks to Atempo’s Time Navigator, Tina product we have a robust backup infrastructure to ensure that if we have an incident, we can recover from it. The software has been in place and our backup routines have been relatively straightforward. We have a focus on-prem backups, we back up to a tape library. So we're able to maintain an air gap between our datasets and that's something that Time Navigator has been utilized for a longtime. For us, it’s been a very stable and very, very much concrete part of our infrastructure. "
Damon Weathers on a Day-in-the-life of Legacy Effects
"We had built a rapport with Guillermo Del Toro when we worked with him on PACIFIC RIM. He came to us to discuss a different project, SHAPE OF WATER. And I happened to be in the room, which was kind of cool. The way he pitches the project is, 'I've got this small black and white indie film. Think of it as a student film.' If anyone would have told us that film would the most consequential film of his career, we would have said you were crazy. But that's just another typical day here at Legacy Effects."
